What is a VAT-qualifying car?
A VAT-qualifying car is a vehicle with VAT shown separately on the purchase invoice. Both new and used vehicles can be VAT-qualifying. This can include passenger cars, commercial vehicles and electric models.
When comparing listings, check whether the purchase price includes or excludes VAT. This helps you compare prices on the same basis.
When can you reclaim VAT?
Under Dutch VAT rules, you may reclaim purchase VAT if you allocate the car to your business assets for VAT purposes and use it for activities subject to VAT, provided the applicable conditions are met. The deduction depends on its use for those taxable activities.
If you also use the car privately, a VAT adjustment for private use may be required. Your entitlement to reclaim VAT therefore depends on your business and how you use the car.
How does VAT work with financial lease?
With financial lease, you finance your business vehicle through fixed monthly instalments. You spread the purchase over the agreed term, preserving cash for your business.
Purchase VAT is charged at the start. Depending on the financing arrangement, you may need to pay this amount yourself upfront. You then claim any deductible VAT through your VAT return.
Your lease proposal shows the amount you finance, how the VAT is paid and any down payment required. Together, we also consider the term and an optional balloon payment. This gives you a clear understanding of your payments and the associated terms.
Once all instalments and any balloon payment have been paid, the car is fully yours.
VAT-qualifying or margin scheme car?
With a VAT-qualifying car, purchase VAT may be recoverable, subject to the applicable conditions. With a VAT margin scheme car, VAT is not shown separately on the purchase invoice, and you cannot reclaim VAT on the purchase.
The right option for your business depends on the purchase price, your eligibility to reclaim VAT and the financing terms. Consider both the total costs and the amount you need upfront.
